How to Store and Protect Your Outdoor Furniture for Winter?
When winter arrives, your outdoor furniture that has served you so well through the summer and fall deserves some care and attention. Even if your patio furniture is made to withstand the elements or sits under a covered deck, it still needs proper cleaning, protection, and storage to stay in good condition until next season.
Step 1: Give Everything a Good Clean

The most important step before storage is cleaning. Moisture, dirt, and debris left on furniture can lead to mold and mildew over the winter months. Once mold starts to grow, it spreads quickly and can cause lasting damage.
-
For wicker, wrought iron, metal mesh, or plastic furniture:
Mix mild dish soap with warm water, scrub gently with a sponge or brush, and rinse thoroughly. -
For wooden furniture:
Use Murphy’s Oil Soap and water to clean the surface, rinse, and allow it to dry completely.
For stubborn stains, combine 1 cup of liquid ammonia, ½ cup of vinegar, ¼ cup of baking soda, and 1 gallon of water. Use a soft brush to scrub the spots, then rinse well and dry thoroughly. -
For cushions and fabrics:
Clean before storage to prevent mold growth. Mix ½ cup of Lysol with 1 gallon of hot water, scrub the surface gently, rinse, and let the cushions dry completely.
For tougher stains, try ½ cup of bleach mixed with 1 gallon of water, but always test it on a small hidden area first.
Step 2: Apply a Protective Coating

Once everything is clean and dry, apply a layer of protection:
-
Aluminum or plastic furniture: A thin coat of car wax helps repel moisture and prevent fading.
-
Wicker furniture: Apply a layer of paste wax for added protection.
-
Metal furniture: Check for rust spots first. Use a wire brush to remove them, then spray a coat of silicone sealant to prevent further corrosion.
Step 3: Use Protective Covers

Furniture covers are essential to keep out moisture, dust, and UV rays—even if you’re storing your furniture in a shed or garage.
-
Stacking chair covers: Ideal for outdoor chairs that can be nested together. Look for PE material covers with reinforced edges, UV resistance, and waterproof coating.
-
Patio dining set covers: These can protect your entire outdoor dining set, including both the table and chairs. When choosing one, check whether it includes elastic hems or straps to keep the cover secure and ensure the legs are fully protected.
Whether you’re storing your outdoor dining chairs, a cozy patio lounge set, or a full outdoor dining set, a bit of care now will make all the difference when spring returns. Proper cleaning, sealing, and covering will help your furniture last longer, look better, and be ready to enjoy as soon as the warm weather comes back.
